As explained by BDC Magazine in their article “What Is An Exhaust Gas Temperature (EGT) Sensor?,” exhaust gas temperature (EGT) sensors are increasingly used in modern vehicles due to strict emissions regulations. These sensors play a crucial role in engine efficiency, emissions control, and vehicle safety but also have high failure rates, making repairs and replacements common.
What Does an EGT Sensor Do?
An EGT sensor measures the temperature of exhaust gases and sends this data to the engine control unit (ECU), which can then adjust:
- Fuel injection to regulate catalytic converter efficiency.
- Turbocharger boost pressure to prevent overheating.
- Diesel particulate filter (DPF) regeneration to reduce harmful emissions.
